In woodworking school our design instructor gave us a design assignment: create in 3-D a
"closed form" that is a container of some sort and use applied color in the design. (A
"closed form" is a form that has all of the information that you need to understand the form on its surface.) I had just started to explore carving and was totally into it. So I took a pair of real jeans, soaked them in pure liquid starch, shaped them and let them dry until they were hard as a rock. Using this as my model, I carved out of solid poplar wood the
"Blue Jeans" with the front pocket hollowed out. I then mixed and applied aniline dyes to create the
"blue" in the "Blue Jeans" and colored the rivets with metallic enamel paint.
I love the response I get when I pull my car keys out of the pocket of my
"Blue Jeans" hanging on the wall next to my front door!
