Sometimes it is best to step back and let the Ultimate Designer’s work be seen and admired with as little human intervention as possible. That is my approach as I fashion these clocks.
The wood used for these clocks is shagbark hickory. Small
"burls" or truncated branches form on these trees. When I saw the wild wood grain patterns under the bark and the amazing color inside, I knew I should let the wood speak for itself.
I choose shapes that will stand by themselves or with only minimal
additional support. I change the shape of the burl enough to blend the shiny, polished clock front with the back—burled grain exposed after removing the bark, cleaning, and applying a hand-rubbed finish.
The finish and shape allow the wood to radiate with a depth and warmth that enhance the natural color and grain patterns of the hickory, making the Natural Clock a pleasure to view and display!
