My work is a reflection of Life—my surroundings, people and events, both close
and far away. There are challenges to be faced; however, there is much that we
are blessed with. This work represents a renewal for me. It came at an important
time, helping me recognize and embrace the promises of the future. This work is
my celebration of the renewal and continuance of Life.
Renewal was a finalist in the tenth annual themed
design competition at the Wharton Esherick Museum in Paoli,
Pennsylvania, in September 2003.

From solid wood I hand-carved buds and leaves in progressive stages of growth to depict the renewal of life. The reflection in the mirror adds another dimension to the bud and leaves. To see the opening in the bud and the underside of the leaves, the reflection in the mirror must be used.
This rendition of Renewal shows a more subtle curve of the stem and a softer movement of the leaves. This evokes in the mind of the viewer, even without conscious thought, a gentle breeze in an environment that is calm and relaxing.
